family reformation

Picture
Just as the Church is to be an agent of grace, the family is to be an agent of Christian discipleship. Although the Church is to lead, support and strengthen the family in this task, it is the ultimately the responsibility of the husband to advance the kingdom of Christ in union with his wife and the training of their offspring in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. In its God-ordained model, the husband is to lead his family as its head under Christ. Outside of man’s submission to Christ, his role as the head of the house cannot reasonably be fulfilled. To be a true Christian leader, his authority must be godly as he directs his family in the ways of the Lord. All men must be under authority and a husband who attempts to lead his wife without himself being under Christ’s authority will fail. As the head of the home he must also understand that he is not a dictator over his wife but the servant of God ordained to lead her. God has ordained that his wife is to assist in this dominion mandate.
Therefore, both father and mother are primarily responsible for the discipline and instruction of their children. A wise and godly man will understand that his authority is not given to subordinate his wife under his control but to inspire, strengthen and sanctify her in this union for the advancement of Christ’s kingdom. She was created by God to be man’s help-meet and not his slave. She is to be acknowledged and supported in the governance of the family and not viewed as an object to be subdued or dominated. However, the wife is commanded by God to be submitted unto the godly leadership of her husband but ultimately her obedience is to Christ as her husband leads her in the Lord. As in all authority, we must obey God rather than man when we are commanded to do what God has forbidden or to abstain in doing what God requires.

It is the goal of Christian parents to exercise dominion in their vocation, the training and education of their children and their example and influence in society.

This mandate unto the man is to lead his family in every particular area of life by conforming all things in obedience to Christ. This begins with the man’s personal life in true profession and obedience to the whole counsel of God. Second, the man must lead by example in protecting, providing for, teaching and correcting them in the ways of God and maintaining peace and order in the home. Third, he is to exercise his gifts and calling as God has enabled him in the church and civil society.

The wife is to submit to the godly leadership of her husband by being committed and united with him in work of preserving and advancing the Kingdom of Christ. She is to reverence her husband as the delegated representative of Christ in their home. However, she is not a passive observer but is to manage the household for the support, preservation and advancement of their covenantal calling, parental calling, vocational calling and according to the gifts God has given to them for the support of godliness in the Church and civil society.

Covenant Commission seeks to educate, evangelize and reform families according to the Holy Scriptures so they may be fruitful and always abounding in the work of the Lord.
